The National
Ballet of Canada

The National Ballet of Canada is a Canadian ballet company that was founded in 1951 in Toronto, Ontario, with Celia Franca, the first artistic director. A company of 70 dancers with its own orchestra, the National Ballet has been led since 2022 by artistic director Hope Muir.

Renowned for its diverse repertoire, the company performs traditional full-length classics, embraces contemporary work and encourages the creation of new ballets as well as the development of Canadian choreographers.

As a freelance designer, I currently support the company and Art Director in helping roll-out assets for launch of their new 24/25 rebrand, coming July 2024.

Work

  • The Ballet Boutique operates in the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto, home of The National Ballet of Canada.

Focusing on the seven types of movement within ballet, I created hand drawn type that spelled out National Ballet of Canada, but with these typical movements in mind. The end result generated retro inspired hand drawn type that flowed from space to space, with more grounded characters and words at the top and bottom of the piece to bring balance and tie the whole look together.

Multiple colour palettes were provided and were inspired by old costumes from previous dances done by the National Ballet of Canada during the 1960s and 1970s.
